STATEWIDE – The AAA Hoosier Motor Club says the majority of car crashes involving deer happen in November, and experts want to help you stay safe.

According to the organization, “more than 14,000 deer-vehicle collisions are reported in Indiana” each year, with the highest number of those often happening in November.  This time of year is when the animals mate and prepare for winter.

So, to stay safe, you are urged to:

  • Keep Your Eyes Moving Back and Forth
  • Use Your Brights Whenever Possible
  • Be Especially Watchful During Rush Hours
  • Slow Down and Watch for Multiple Deer to Appear
  • Honk Your Horn with One Long Blast if You See an Animal
  • Wear Your Seatbelt.

And, if you are going to hit a deer, the Motor Club notes that there are ways to reduce the damage to yourself and your car.  Experts encourage you to:

  • Use Your Brakes if an Impact is Imminent, and Stay in Your Lane
  • Pull to the Side of the Road and Use Hazard Lights After Impact
  • Do Not Approach Injured Animals
  • Call Police for Help.
