The holiday season often brings joy, togetherness, and a sense of warmth. But, for many, it also means navigating tense family dynamics, unspoken expectations, or difficult conversations. If you’ve already dealt with challenging family members over Thanksgiving, or if you know you’ll have to before the year is over, here’s an important reminder: Protect your energy.

When the atmosphere is thick with tension, you can literally feel it. The energy in the room shifts, leaving a sense of unease, discomfort, or even frustration. And if you’re not careful, it’s easy to let that energy seep into your own emotional state. But here’s the thing: you have control over your own energy.

It can be incredibly empowering to realize that you don’t have to let someone else’s mood or negativity hijack your own feelings. You can choose how you respond to any situation, no matter how stressful or challenging.

Decide How You Want to Feel

The first step in protecting your energy is deciding how you want to feel. This might sound simplistic, but it’s incredibly powerful. When you’re in a potentially uncomfortable situation, consciously decide in advance how you want to show up.

Do you want to feel calm? Peaceful? Grounded? Choose it.

By setting this intention, you’re already creating a mental space that isn’t at the mercy of external chaos. You’re reminding yourself that your emotional state is in your hands, regardless of what happens around you.

Calmness is Your Best Asset

In any stressful situation, including family gatherings, your calmness is your best asset. It’s easy to get caught up in someone else’s drama or to be triggered by a sharp remark or uncomfortable conversation. But, the calmer you are, the more you create a sense of emotional safety—not only for yourself, but for everyone in the room.

When you maintain a peaceful demeanor, it’s harder for other people’s negativity to affect you. Your calmness can even diffuse the tension in the room. It might not change the way others behave, but it can change the way you feel.

Remember: You Are in Control

The holidays are meant to bring us together, but they don’t have to come at the cost of your peace. By consciously protecting your energy and choosing how you want to show up, you’ll not only make the season more enjoyable for yourself—but also for those around you.
