Indiana’s 3rd-place ranking on WalletHub’s 2025 Best & Worst States to Drive In report may sound impressive, but when it comes to road conditions, not all Hoosiers agree. The state’s 2nd place ranking for road quality doesn’t always match the real experience on the ground.

The Stats and the Reality
Indiana earns high marks in several key areas, such as:
- Rush-Hour Traffic: Indiana ranks 10th, with manageable congestion.
- Car-Related Services: With a 14th-place ranking for auto-repair shops per capita and 13th for car dealerships.
- Affordability: The state places 15th for auto-maintenance costs and 25th for gas prices.
The area where Indiana’s ranking doesn’t quite align with reality is road quality. While WalletHub places the state 2nd in the nation, many Indiana residents complain about deteriorating road conditions that don’t match the statistics. Potholes, uneven surfaces, and frequent construction zones remain common frustrations for drivers.

According to WalletHub, traffic congestion cost the average driver $771 in 2024, with 43 hours spent in gridlock. However, for many Hoosiers, the issue isn’t just being stuck in traffic—it’s navigating roads that are in need of repair. Indiana’s secondary roads, city streets, and highways often bear the brunt of seasonal wear, with potholes cropping up each year, frustrating drivers who must deal with these rough conditions regularly. Indiana’s crossroads have become the punchline to jokes on social media.
