The upcoming Harry Potter TV series has found its Dumbledore.

Acclaimed actor John Lithgow has confirmed that he will take on the role of the beloved Hogwarts Headmaster in HBO’s highly anticipated adaptation of J.K. Rowling’s iconic book series.

Lithgow Opens Up About the Casting Decision

In an exclusive interview with ScreenRant, Lithgow revealed that accepting the role was not an easy choice, citing the significant time commitment required.

The 79-year-old actor shared that he was approached while attending the Sundance Film Festival and initially wrestled with the decision.

However, he ultimately embraced the opportunity, acknowledging the weight of the role.

“It came as a total surprise to me,” Lithgow said. “I just got the phone call up at Sundance for yet another film, and it was not an easy decision because it’s going to define me for the last chapter of my life, I’m afraid. But I’m very excited. Some wonderful people are turning their attention back to Harry Potter. That’s why it’s been such a hard decision. I’ll be about 87 years old at the wrap party, but I’ve said yes.”

What Lithgow’s Casting Means for the HBO Series

Lithgow is the first officially confirmed cast member for the Harry Potter TV show, signaling that the project is gaining momentum.

While HBO has remained tight-lipped about the casting process, this reveal suggests more announcements may be on the way.

The series is set to begin filming in the summer of 2025 at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden in the U.K., with a projected release in late 2026 or early 2027.

Reports indicate that Paapa Essiedu is a frontrunner for the role of Severus Snape, though no official confirmation has been made.

Meanwhile, casting for the trio of Harry, Hermione, and Ron is expected to focus on fresh, lesser-known talent.

With Lithgow now stepping into the shoes once filled by Richard Harris and Michael Gambon, fans eagerly await further updates on how the Harry Potter reboot will take shape.
