How travelers without REAL ID can fly for now

The REAL ID system is now in effect in North Carolina, with an enforcement date of May 7.
Those without a REAL ID can still board flights but may face additional screening. A REAL ID or other compliant form of identification with a star will be required for domestic flights and federal facilities.
TSA will continue to issue REAL IDs after the enforcement date, with no difference in cost compared to regular licenses or IDs.
Head of Homeland Security Kristi Noem told a congressional panel that 81% of travelers already have IDs that comply with the REAL ID requirements.
Those who still lack an identification that complies with the REAL ID law “may be diverted to a different line, have an extra step,” Noem said.
She said security checkpoints will also be accepting passports and tribal identification when the deadline hits Wednesday.
